Making the Right Choice

The Penningtons School helps our Students set their college goals, then works with them to acheive success.
The Pennington School helps students and parents set their college goals, then works with them to achieve success.

We find the right match for every student.

The college search and application process is a challenging one.  Parents, along with the college guidance counselor, are important players in the college selection process; however,  it is the student who plays the primary role. A successful college search is almost always the result of a family effort: the student’s working with his or her parents on setting goals, discussing financial needs, making college visits, meeting with the college guidance counselor, and attending college representative visits. The college guidance counselor's role is to listen, provide guidance, and supply information on all aspects of the process, and, most of all, be a “sounding board” for the student in this critical decision.

Finding and selecting the appropriate college for each student is a thoughtful, considered endeavor that begins during the freshman and sophomore years. The Pennington School believes that every graduate should attend the college or university that suits his or her own interests and strengths. To identify the best match, each student's unique personality, achievements, and goals are taken into consideration.

College guidance counselors provide an overview of the college selection process with informative seminars for students and their parents beginning in ninth grade. During junior year, counselors work with students on an individual basis as they attend college fairs, take standardized tests, and start narrowing down their lists of colleges to create a selection of schools most appropriate for the student's specific interests and career goals. During the senior year, students are supported as they complete and submit applications to the schools of their choice.

Students from The Pennington School attend some of the most prestigious and selective colleges and universities in the country and abroad (see matriculation lists, right).

The College Guidance program includes:

  • Seminars and information sessions beginning freshman year
  • Individual meetings with students starting in their junior year
  • Parent programs to assist with the college selection and application process, including applying for financial aid and affording college tuition
  • Advice for our athletes about recruitment
  • College visits (more than 130!) to our campus throughout the year
  • Newsletters packed with reminders and important information for students and parents
  • Planning checklists
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Advice on writing the application essays
