English as a Second Language (ESL)

Students enrolled in ESL courses take a full array of Upper School courses in math, science, English, and other subjects. ESL courses are designed to support the ongoing progress of ESL students in their current classes. A supplemental fee is associated with these classes.

English as a Second Language III; Grade 9

English as a Second Language III

This course is designed as a direct curricular support class for advanced students who are enrolled in English I. As in all ESL courses, reading, writing, listening, and speaking are integrated in the coursework. At this level, students improve their abilities in reading comprehension, contributing effectively to class discussions, and thinking in English. Writing skills are enhanced through the process of correction and revision and the study of grammar.

This course is designed as a direct curricular support class for advanced students who are enrolled in English II. Students are introduced to course elements such as vocabulary, content, themes, and symbolism in order to assist their understanding in their standard college-preparatory English class. In writing, students are encouraged to express themselves through the use of details and ideas from their readings and discussions. Students also develop their writing skills with structured guidance on writing assignments.

Seminar in Expository Writing

Seminar in Expository Writing
The seminar in expository writing is designed to support fluent students of English as a Second Language who seek refinement of their research and writing skills. The emphasis is on producing polished writing for assignments in other classes as well as preparing students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The writing seminar will use established models and curricula of information and technology literacy. By applying these models to assignments in core content areas, such as history and literature, students will find, process, and use information effectively. Students will improve the fluidity of their writing and the efficiency of their problem solving. Students will work more efficiently and produce high-quality written work. Students will present their work to their teacher and classmates, seek feedback, and constantly assess their own processes and products.
