Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I did not decide at first to become a teacher. I was a research scientist; that was my dream. I first worked as a lab tech at Michigan State University (E. Lansing, Michigan). I was there for two years. Then I moved to NJ to work for Bristol-Myers Squibb. I was at BMS for thirteen years. I was a scientist for fifteen years before I came to The Pennington School in the fall of 2003.

Who was your mentor growing up?

My parents. They grew up in the South and faced discrimination. They taught me to stand on my own two feet and how to handle discrimination with dignity.

What's your teaching philosophy?

Life skills. Since I was not trained as teacher, I feel I bring the real world into the classroom. Biology is just the tool I use to teach the students skills they will need for college and the world beyond.

Favorite snack?

Apples…the students see me eating an apple every day.

Favorite movie?

One of my favorite movies is a black and white movie, All About Eve.

Favorite thing to do in the summer time?

Working with an organization called Interfaith Caregivers for Greater Mercer County. I help a full-time volunteer during the summer, giving that volunteer a chance to get a break. I enjoy the friendships I make with the people I help during the summer.
