Female teacher smiling outsideWhy did you decide to become a teacher?

Nearly all members of my extended family are either preachers or teachers, so it was going to be a coin flip. In second grade, I wrote a story about myself in the future as a teacher and the rest is history. I am now living my story!

Who was your mentor growing up?

My mentor growing up was my aunt, Helen Mack, who was a teacher of gifted and talented students. She had an impact on thousands of students in her career, and sadly passed away from cancer in 2007. From her I learned that teaching should be a combination of continued learning, fun, challenge, and creativity.

What's your teaching philosophy?

Every student has inner star power, meaning that there is something special in each of them waiting to shine. I try to seek that light in my students -- in the classroom, in the hallways, in advisory, or on stage.

Favorite snack?

String cheese and gummy candy.

Favorite movie?

I love the Harry Potter movies. The Deathly Hallows Part I is my favorite.

Favorite thing to do in the summer time?

I love to spend summers sitting on the beach in Maine, alternating between reading and staring at the sea.
