The Pennington School has announced that Osagie Imasogie will be the speaker at the 2013 Commencement exercises on Saturday, June 1. Mr. Imasogie is senior managing partner of Phoenix IP Ventures in Philadelphia. His daughter, Masoma, is a member of the Class of 2013.

The Pennington School’s Odyssey of the Mind team won the state tournament held on Saturday, April 13. They will go on to compete in the world finals in Ann Arbor, MI, on May 23-24. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem solving competition.

A team of seven Middle School students from The Pennington School recently triumphed in the regional competition for building a submersible Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) and are heading to the national contest in May.

Henry Sheeran '14 has been awarded an all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). He was selected as a national winner after scoring in the ninetieth percentile on the Level III 2013 National German Exam for High School Students . . .

Four Pennington School students have discovered two previously unknown viruses. Working as a team every day in the laboratory, the students took more than four months to isolate and purify the viruses from local soil samples. The four are students in an innovative honors research course, Advanced Research in Molecular Biology, launched at the School in 2011 by biology teacher Dr. David Hauser.

Pennington drama students won awards in several categories at the New Jersey Thespian Festival, held at Kean University in Newark on Sunday, March 10. The students competed in a variety of acting and technical theatre areas, and six came home with significant honors.

The Red Cross Blood Drive, sponsored by the Junior Proctors on Feb. 19, collected 63 units of blood--potentially saving as many as 189 lives. The JPs thank all of the students and adults who donated blood or contributed baked goods for the comfort station.

The cast, crews, band, and faculty advisors for the Winter Musical, Hairspray, recently held a Valentines for Food Drive to support the food banks of the Crisis Ministry . The group brought in ninety-nine bags of food to feed the hungry of Mercer County. Reusable bags were donated by the Pennington Quality Market.

Eleven Pennington School seniors—seven soccer players, two football players, one tennis player and one baseball player—signed NCAA National Letters of Intent at the School yesterday. They will pursue their chosen sports at Division I colleges and universities.

Thirty-one Pennington School students were inducted into the Tri-Steps Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held at the Pennington United Methodist Church on Jan. 23. The 13 seniors and 18 juniors were selected on the criteria of scholarship, character, service, and leadership.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, The Pennington School welcomed more than 360 guests to its annual holiday party for clients of HomeFront, the organization serving Mercer County families in need. The School has a longstanding relationship with HomeFront, and the holiday event has been held each December for over two decades. There were nearly 100 student, faculty, and parent volunteers . . .

Ambassador David Hale, special envoy for Middle East peace, spoke at The Pennington School on Dec. 18 as part of the school’s Stephen Crane Lecture Series. As special envoy, Hale reports to and works closely with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He represents the United States in facilitating peace in the Middle East.

Thirty-six Pennington juniors and seniors spent Dec. 7 and 8 in Washington, DC, exploring issues related to the topic "Church and State." In addition to visiting various relevant sites in the nation's capital and participating in workshops, they were able to meet with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, with the chaplain of the House of Representatives, and with staff of Rep. Rush Holt. The students are enrolled . . .

This month’s First Friday event will bring magician and former Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey clown Kevin Carr to the campus on Dec. 7. Carr, a twenty-year veteran of the entertainment business—making people laugh—is a professional actor and clown, as well. First Friday events welcome all Pennington students to enjoy a fun evening on the campus.

Noted filmmaker Andre Robert Lee came to The Pennington School on Nov. 14 and presented his acclaimed documentary, The Prep School Negro, to students and parents. Students viewed the film in the afternoon, followed by a question-and-answer session with Lee; the parents' screening and discussion with Lee occurred that evening.

The Pennington School Parents Association has a new international branch: Pennington parents in Shanghai, China, have begun to get together regularly. The first gathering was one of mothers at a teahouse on Oct. 21, when Cathy Tong, mother of Yutong Zhou '15, reports that the group conversed enthusiastically for six hours! On Sunday, Oct. 21, The Pennington School held its fourth annual Run for the Cure race to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure^®. A record number of 250 students, faculty, parents, and friends of The Pennington School turned out to participate and raise money for the foundation devoted to seeking a cure for breast cancer. The event, organized by the senior peer leaders, raised more than $6,000 for the foundation.

Just as school was beginning, Middle School students, faculty, and staff prepared fresh vegetables and herbs grown in the School garden for delivery to the Crisis Ministry food pantry in Trenton.

The Pennington School formally opened its academic year with Convocation on Sunday, Sept. 9. The 484 students currently enrolled comprise day students from the area and boarding students from both the United States and countries around the world ranging from China to Uzbekistan.

Pennington rising senior and professional disc jockey (DJ) Dane Kunkel is spending his time this summer producing an electronic dance music (EDM) concert for thousands of teens and young adults. He hopes to raise $100,000 from ticket sales for Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Slated for September 29, 2012, at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ, the concert will kick off October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Pennington School has announced the appointment of Stephen D. Milich as director of admission. Milich comes to Pennington from The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where he had been associate director of admission since 2008. In a career devoted to admissions . . .

The Pennington School held graduation ceremonies on June 7 for its Middle School at the Pennington United Methodist Church. Thirty students were graduated. Head of Middle School Todd D. Paige offered opening remarks and announced eighth-grade award-winners, and Head of School Stephanie G. Townsend and faculty advisors joined him in presenting the diplomas.

Vince Iorio, prominent saxophonist and orchestra leader, recently donated his vast collection of jazz arrangements to The Pennington School. The arrangements, for solos, combos, and Big Band ensembles, are “priceless,” according to Dr. Donald Dolan, director of the School’s Jazz Band. Iorio is the grandfather of Isabella Iorio ’17 and David Iorio ’18.

One hundred fifty alumni from across the generations brought their families and friends to Pennington and reconnected in the glorious sunshine on Friday afternoon, May 18, and Saturday, May 19.

Saturday's Mary Kline Classic, established by Alex Kline '12 and co-sponsored by the School, brought a capacity crowd to Sparks Gymnasium. An estimated 1,000 people attended, and representatives of at least 50 media outlets, including the New York Times , the New York Post , and Slam Online covered the story. The event raised $20,000 for brain cancer research.

Pennington sophomore Luke Decker recently received the Ralph Muzzey Youth Leadership Award from the Hunterdon County YMCA, recognizing especially his work in developing a free tennis camp for Hispanic children in Flemington. . . .

In what has become a tradition associated with the winter musical, members of the cast, band, and crews used Valentine's Day as a theme while collecting nonperishable food items for the Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton.

Competing for only the fourth time against twenty-five public and private high schools in the New Jersey Science Olympiad, Pennington's nine-student team has advanced to the state finals.

Pennington junior William McComb has been selected for the 2011 New Jersey Scholars Program. Each year the program taps "39 of the most intelligent, outgoing, and highly motivated rising high school seniors who are residents of New Jersey" for the five-week "intensive interdisciplinary program," held on the campus of the Lawrenceville School. This year's program addresses the topic "Human Rights: Past. Present. Future."

Pennington School junior Jin Woo Song played Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 on March 27 at Carnegie Hall. Song was awarded the Grand Prix in Music-Fest’s Rising Talents competition, giving him the privilege of performing in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Song, whose home is in Seoul, Korea, has studied piano privately with Pennington music teacher Donald Dolan for the last four years.

The entire student body, plus faculty and staff, assembled on O'Hanlon Green at the School's Veterans Monument on the morning of Veterans Day. They watched in respectful silence as a detachment of U.S. Marines raised the flag. School Chaplain Chuck Coblentz closed the ceremony with a prayer. The Marines were from Battery G, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, Trenton, NJ.

The School’s Run for the Cure on Oct. 17 drew a record 116 participants and raised $4,500 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the foundation for breast cancer research. The 5K run, organized and sponsored by the senior Peer Leaders, had almost twice the number of walkers and runners as last year.

On April 29, sixth-graders celebrated “Poem In Your Pocket Day.” The idea was simple: sixth-graders from Lisa Kessel’s Humanities class were asked to carry poems in their pockets and share them with their classmates and teachers.

The theme of this year’s TPS Diversity Days, expanded from the formerly named Diversity Week, was “Building Bridges That Bind.” The activities and events, culminating in Community Day, were planned to help students, faculty, and staff understand both who they are and then who they are when they connect with people who are similar to and different from them.
