<p>Four Pennington School students have discovered two previously unknown viruses. Working as a team every day in the laboratory, the students took more than four months to isolate and purify the viruses from local soil samples. The four are students in an innovative honors research course, Advanced Research in Molecular Biology, launched at the School in 2011 by biology teacher Dr. David Hauser.</p>

	As it has done for the past ten years, the National Honor Society is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Mount Carmel Guild of Trenton. Every student is asked to bring at least two nonperishable food items, plus a dollar or two toward the purchase of turkeys, to his or her advisory group meeting on Thursday. Over the years, students, faculty, staff, and parents have contributed thousands of items of food, about a hundred turkeys, plus additional money to enable the Guild to purchase additional food for the needy of the greater Trenton area.</p>

	On Sunday, Oct. 21, The Pennington School held its fourth annual Run for the Cure race to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure<sup>®</sup>. A record number of 250 students, faculty, parents, and friends of The Pennington School turned out to participate and raise money for the foundation devoted to seeking a cure for breast cancer. The event, organized by the senior peer leaders, raised more than $6,000 for the foundation.</p>

	Vince Iorio, prominent saxophonist and orchestra leader, recently donated his vast collection of jazz arrangements to The Pennington School. The arrangements, for solos, combos, and Big Band ensembles, are “priceless,” according to Dr. Donald Dolan, director of the School’s Jazz Band. Iorio is the grandfather of Isabella Iorio ’17 and David Iorio ’18.</p>

	Saturday's Mary Kline Classic, established by Alex Kline '12 and co-sponsored by the School, brought a capacity crowd to Sparks Gymnasium. An estimated 1,000 people attended, and representatives of at least 50 media outlets, including the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/06/sports/ncaabasketball/nj-high-school-student-is-also-a-keen-student-of-college-basketball-recruiting.html?_r=1">New York Times </a>, the <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/high_school/basketball/city_players_help_fight_against_C4rgWVH2QJvmDgb5rhO5BN">New York Post </a>, and <a href="http://www.slamonline.com/online/college-hs/high-school/2012/05/not-just-another-charity-event/">Slam Online </a>covered the story. The event raised $20,000 for brain cancer research.</p>

Carmel Guild in Trenton was quite successful. Each Middle and Upper School homeroom brought in various nonperishable food items and cash. The entire Pennington School community donated over 1,500 food items and $900.00. The Mt. Carmel Guild has been serving the Greater Mercer County area’s disadvantaged population since 1920. <p>The entire student body, plus faculty and staff, assembled on O'Hanlon Green at the School's Veterans Monument on the morning of Veterans Day. They watched in respectful silence as a detachment of U.S. Marines raised the flag. School Chaplain Chuck Coblentz closed the ceremony with a prayer. <p>The School’s Run for the Cure on Oct. 17 drew a record 116 participants and raised $4,500 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the foundation for breast cancer research.
