Classical piano competition held on campus

On Friday, April 8, 2022, Pennington held its third classical piano competition on campus. Eight students participated, both from Pennington and invited schools. Pennington student Jonny Santarsiero '22 helped to organize and run the event, and he presented the awards. Student performers included:

Students played for two jurors: José Ramos-Santana and Tomoko Kanamaru. Ramos-Santana currently teaches at the Hartt School of Music and at New York University, and is a renowned piano player and winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. Kanamaru, an associate professor at The College of New Jersey, is a successful pianist, chamber musician, and lecturer. The jurors awarded prizes to four students:

Grand Prix: Ben Jiang '22, for playing Debussy's first Image from Book I and Chopin's C# minor Etude (Op. 10, no.4)

Best Bach: Sophia Liu '24, for playing Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C minor

Best Classical Era: Muhan Tian '26, for playing Beethoven's Sonata No. 25 in G major, Movement I (Op. 79)

Best Romantic Era - Vicky Zhu '22, for playing Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor (Op. 23, No. 5)
