Pennington's varsity girls' basketball team captured the championship of the 14th Annual John Molinelli Holiday Classic as they defeated Voorhees High School on Thursday, December 28, at Lawrence High School.

The Red Raiders put together two excellent games in a row and displayed team depth, impressive scoring ability, tenacious defense and a selfless approach to playing the game of basketball.

The final score was 58-35. Pennington's starting five of Carly Rice, Diamond Christian, Leah Johnson, Ayanna Johnson and Gianna Lucchesi set the tone early and took the Red Raiders out to a 19-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Vikings of Voorhees did all they could to stay in the game during the first half as Pennington demonstrated its depth and ability to rest members of the starting five when needed.

Mia Justus and Dana Kiefer played big minutes for the Red Raiders as did Sophia Kavulich and Jackie King. Sophia Kavulich, Justus and Kiefer increased Pennington's abilities to both score the basketball and defend it. King played steady and is ever-fearless in her approach to the game on the court.

Mary Griswold, Ava Kavulich and Luisa Andrade played well in the Red Raiders championship game. Leah Johnson was named tournament MVP while Rice and Lucchesi joined her on the all-tournament team.

Pennington will face a talented Moorestown Friends team on Wednesday, January 3 to kick off the 2018 portion of their season. That game takes place at Moorestown Friends at 5:30 p.m.
