Girls' basketball defeats Hopewell to capture Molinelli title

Pennington's varsity girls' basketball team captured its second Molinelli Holiday Classic title in a row as it defeated the host school Hopewell by a score of 67-40.

Hopewell came out strong and stayed with the Red Raiders only trailing by 10 at the half, 31-21. Another solid quarter for Hopewell kept the championship game close until Pennington's strong fourth quarter in which they pulled away from the Bulldogs by a score of 23-9.

Pennington's scrappy defense combined with some hot shooting by Taylor Blunt '20, Leah Johnson '19, and Gianna Lucchesi '19 sealed the Red Raiders second Molinelli title in a row. Pennington has now played in four straight Molinelli finals.

As has been the case throughout Pennington's fine season to date (8-1), the team was fueled by both starters and substitutes including Dana Kiefer '21, MK Kramli '22, Ava Kavulich '21, Sophia Kavulich '21, Jackie King '21, Jenna Bluni '22, Amy Garry '19 and Brynne Taranto '22.

Senior point guard Diamond "D.C." Christian scored 10 points, made three steals and handed out seven assists in yet another impressive performance for the captain.

Senior captain Leah Johnson scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.

Taylor Blunt '20 was named tournament MVP as she scored 26 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals.

Dana Kiefer and MK Kramli played well in victory as did Emma Garry '19 as she kicked in four points, three assists and three rebounds to go along with her ever-persistent defense.

The Red Raiders get back into action on January 9 at Stuart.
