Pennington student's art awarded first place honors

Pennington student Gloria Liu '23 was awarded First Place honors representing New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District in the 2020 Congressional Art Competition. This annual event is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent across the nation.

Liu's piece, "An Innocent Smile," created outside of the classroom, was critiqued in the School's virtual Art Club meeting and in an Art III class.

According to Liu, "This painting depicts the innocent smile of a baby. The adorable smile demonstrates what pure hope, kindness, and happiness are like in a world of turmoil."

The first-place winner's work will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, along with artwork from contest winners nationwide. Liu's piece will also be displayed on the website and social media pages of Rep. Tom Malinowski (N.J. 7th District). The competition Liu won was open to all high school students in New Jersey's 7th Congressional district and was moved to a digital format this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
