Opening Days Schedule

Detailed information regarding the opening days of school, including US preseason and Upper School Orientation, will be included in the August 15 letters from Chad Bridges and Chrissie Knight. 

Required School forms are due no later than July 1, 2023. You will submit all forms through Magnus Health. New families may access Magnus Health through the Veracross Parent Portal using single sign-on.  It is especially important to provide the Health Center with updated immunization records for your child. COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are highly recommended, but not required.

After reviewing your student’s final schedule in Veracross in August, you may purchase course texts and online resources through Follett. 

If you haven’t already done so, please withdraw your child from their current school and request to have final academic records, health records, and an official transcript emailed to registrar@pennington.org. Email is preferred but records can also be mailed to The Pennington School, Deborah Mitchell, Registrar, 112 West Delaware Avenue, Pennington, NJ 08534. 

Student/Parent Directory

Parents are able to update their own directory information by logging into Veracross. A student/parent directory for the current year is always available online. The directory includes the student’s name and grade, home address, home phone number, parents’ names, and parents’ cell phone numbers and email addresses. Be sure to check your Family Profile at this time. Please confirm all of the details listed and make corrections, if necessary, by July 15. This data is used to create a printed directory that will be available in the fall. Any corrections not made by Friday, July 15, will not be included in the printed version.

If you find any of your own information is listed incorrectly, please update your profile in Veracross by following these steps:

1. Under "My Household," click the "Update Family Profile" link.
2. Verify your address and the other fields. 
3. Make any necessary changes and click "Update."

Class Schedules

View the Middle School daily academic schedule here. Student schedules for Middle School will be posted in mid-August. Parents and students may review their class schedules in Veracross then. If you have any questions, please contact Chrissie Knight.

Middle School Athletics and Activities

Students are required to participate in two or more after-school activities, with at least one being a season of athletics, each year. The activity and athletic season customarily begins during the first full week of school in September. Sign-ups and team meetings take place shortly before the start of each season. Students will be able to meet their coaches or activity advisors, review procedures and expectations, and get a sense of what the season entails. Athletic practices usually begin at 3:30 p.m. and end by 5:00 p.m.

Cubbies and Lockers

At the beginning of the school year, cubbies will be assigned to students in Grades 6 and 7 and lockers will be assigned to students in Grade 8.

Athletic lockers are located in Sparks Gymnasium and are available for all athletes each season. Students are encouraged to bring a combination lock to secure their belongings. 

Middle School students are required to read two books over the summer (a free choice book and a book for their English course). A description of the summer reading books and projects will be posted in the Middle School Summer Reading LibGuide. Feel free to email Chrissie Knight, head of Middle School, with any questions about summer reading.

The Student/Parent Handbook can be found on the Parent Portal of Veracross. The Handbook will give you an in-depth overview of our rules and regulations, School programs, and expectations for students. The Handbook will be updated over the summer and we encourage ALL families to review the handbook together. The 2023-24 Handbook will be posted in August.

Daily Schedule

All new students are now able to review their approved course requests in Veracross. Once you know which courses your child is taking (after viewing final student schedules in August), you can review the Summer Reading and Math requirements (see tabs above).

Parking

Only seniors are permitted to park on campus and they may only park in the senior lot. Underclassmen may park along Green Street or Burd Street. All underclassmen and seniors must register their cars with the School. Boarding students are not permitted to have cars on campus. An email will be sent to students with information regarding the registration process during the first week of school. All vehicles must have a Pennington parking permit displayed at all times, both on campus and on the street.
 

Upper School students are required to read one or more book selections assigned in specific English courses. Upper School students can find their summer reading assignments on the Upper School Summer Reading LibGuide. Students should wait until schedules are final (in mid-August) before completing summer reading requirements.

Summer reading books play a key role in their English class for the first few weeks of the fall semester. Books will be listed in the grade section of the LibGuide. Critical instructions regarding preparation for the opening-of-school discussions of books for English are also posted on that LibGuide, and students should look at these before beginning the reading. Once English course selections have been posted in August, students should read the selection(s) for their approved English course as described in the instructions.

Summer math packets are required for students going into all Upper School math classes except non-AP Statistics. These packets can be found and downloaded here. The intention of the math packet is to help students re-engage with math before school starts and be able to begin class in September ready to learn. Completed packets will be collected on the first day of class and assessed on effort. Questions regarding this requirement can be directed to Elysia Price, chair of the Mathematics Department.

Varsity athletics preseason will start on Sunday, August 27, and go until Friday, September 1. Boarding students will move into their assigned rooms.

To participate in preseason, all required School forms on Magnus must be completed. Unfortunately, students who are missing any of these required forms will be unable to participate in preseason camps or other opening-of-school events. There will be no exceptions. If you have any questions regarding these requirements, please contact healthcenter@pennington.org.

A student who is unable to attend the varsity preseason but still would like to try out for the team will have that opportunity upon arriving at school in September.

Information regarding each team's schedule will be communicated by the coach in August.

All details about dress code can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook on Veracross. Updates to the dress code that are new for 2023-24 will be communicated to families in August.

The State of New Jersey has provided The Pennington School with funds through the Nonpublic Textbook Program for the 2022-23 school year. This fund is set up to help students purchase textbooks who attend non-public schools. If you are receiving this email, your student is eligible to receive certain textbooks through this program when available. Please understand that the funds we receive will not cover all of the student textbooks and not all titles will be available.

In order to participate in this NJ State program, you must complete the attached NJ State form and return it to me no later than July 1. We will then submit the information to the State of NJ and your student will be eligible to receive any available textbooks from the Campus Store in September.

Eligible students should bring a printed Class Schedule to the Campus Store in September to pick up any available textbooks. Please understand there is a limited number of titles and quantities available. I cannot guarantee any availability of a specific title.

Please refer to the major dates calendar for information about the opening of school. You will receive a separate letter for all boarding families with information about the opening of school, move-in dates, dorm room assignments, and roommates at the end of July. 

• All new international boarding students should plan to arrive Thursday, August 31.

• Dormitory prefects should plan to arrive on Friday, September 1.

• Returning international boarding students should plan to arrive Monday, September 4.

• All new and returning domestic boarding students should plan to arrive Monday, September 4.

Laundry facilities are available to each hall. There is no charge to use on-campus laundry machines. There is a laundry service option available through outside vendor All Prep Laundry.

Orah

Orah, is a management tool that we use to improve communication between parents/guardians, boarders, host families, and residential faculty. Using a web-based and iOS app, it allows us to keep track of the status of each boarder, whether on campus, around the campus, or off campus. Up-to-date details of a boarder’s whereabouts can be put into the app by the boarders and by the Administrator on Duty (AOD) to provide information directly to the faculty members who are on duty.

Student Spending Account

Please complete a Student Spending Account Authorization Form to maintain a student spending account while at Pennington. If you have any questions, please contact the Business Office at 609–737–6119. 

Community Weekends

During Community Weekends, all boarders must remain on campus for the entire weekend and are not permitted to return home or to go to a friend’s house during that time. We use this time to help build community, participate in activities, and take part in community service opportunities. Dates for Community Weekends will be posted later this summer.

Once you have access, you can view all financial activity on Veracross by clicking the MY INVOICE button through your Parent Portal.  

International Families:

All international families should have tuition paid in full by July 15. Payments can be made either through Flywire or by wire transfer.

Domestic Families:

Tuition should be paid based on the plan you selected on your submitted contract.  Payments can be made either by ACH or credit card through the portal or by mailing a check to: The Pennington School, Attn: Business Office, 112 W. Delaware Ave, Pennington, NJ 08534.

Two-Payment Plan: The balance of your tuition should be paid on or before the due dates of July 15 and November 1.

Ten-Month Plan: The Pennington School offers domestic parents the option of paying tuition over a ten- (10-) month period, from May 1 to February 1, without any late charges, provided payments are made on a timely basis in accordance with the terms of the plan. When you sign on to the Parent Portal in Veracross and click the MY INVOICE button, you will need to sign up for AutoPay to have your monthly payment debited from your account of choosing.  This is required for the ten-month plan.  

Additional Fees: It is important to remember that any activity fees and tuition insurance must be paid directly to the School by July 15 and should not be included in the monthly payment plan.

Laptops/Training

Parents of all new students (both day and boarding) can use this link to sign up for laptop training and agree to the School's acceptable use policy.  The sessions are listed in the sign-up and run through the month of August. Sessions for new boarding students will be included during Orientation.

Software and Technology

At Pennington, we use several software applications for managing Pennington School records, schedules, and more. This is a quick summary of each one.

Veracross allows you to view your child’s schedule, pay your tuition bill, view attendance, see quarter and semester grades, and more. Log-in information for Veracross and details were emailed to all parents in May.

Schoology is a learning management system used by teachers for posting homework assignments, class resources, upcoming events, and much more. As parents, you will have access to some of this information as well. Look for more information about using Schoology at the beginning of the school year.

Magnus Health is a leader in student health care management which offers electronic signature as well as mobile form submission and parent access from any mobile device.

My Kids Spending

My Kids Spending is a swipe card payment system attached to each student’s School identification card that offers ease of purchases in the Snack Bar, Campus Store, and other nominal School activities.

New parents will receive an email from My Kids Spending (MKS) in mid-August with instructions for setting up and managing their child's MKS account, which will be conveniently accessible through the Veracross parent portal. There is also a MyKidsSpending app available to help you and your child manage the MKS account using iOS and Android devices.

Every Friday morning, parents will receive an email of the Pennington Postings. The Postings contains information about School events and news as well as calendar reminders. Parents have the option to unsubscribe from the Postings, but it is the best way to find out what will be happening in the week ahead. 

The School will send important communications (including updates to the opening of school) through email. You can easily find previously sent emails by visiting the Veracross Parent Portal and clicking on the Email Archive button. 

Students receive a daily communication called The Voice that contains reminders and information about school and extracurricular meetings and club activities. Students and parents can view The Voice if they wish by logging into Schoology, where it is posted each day. Look for more information about using Schoology at the beginning of the school year.

Emergency alerts are used to notify parents and students about School closings or delayed openings. Alerts are sent to all phone numbers in the student’s Veracross record. A test of the emergency notification system takes place early in September. The alerts are also sent as text messages. Please make sure that if your cell phone number changes, you update your contact information in your Veracross Parent Portal. Read more information about the School's inclement weather policy.

The Campus Store, located in the Martini Campus Center, carries a variety of school supplies, sundry items, and Pennington spirit clothing. Campus store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays during the days classes are in session. Students may use My Kids Spending to purchase items in the store. If you have any questions regarding the campus store, please contact Joan Moore. The store will reopen for the fall on August 28. You can also order Pennington gear online by visiting our online campus store.

After reviewing your student’s schedule in Veracross in August, you may purchase course texts and online resources through Follett. 

Snack Bar

The campus snack bar, also located in the MMAC, stocks a wide variety of healthful options for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. It is open daily from 7:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. Students may use My Kids Spending to purchase snacks.

My Kids Spending

All Pennington students are issued ID cards with a swipe card payment system attached. The system is called My Kids Spending. The swipe card offers students an easy and convenient way to make purchases in the Campus Store, the snack bar, and for other School-related activities throughout the year. 

New families will receive an email from My Kids Spending (MKS) with instructions for setting up and managing their child 's MKS account in July. If you have not received an email from support@mykidsspending.com, please contact HelpDesk for technical support.

After that your My Kids Spending (MKS)  accounts have been set up for use in the Campus Store and Snack Bar, it is important that you check your balances regularly to ensure you have money in your account prior to making a purchase. Checking your balance is easy. Get the iOS app from the App Store or the Android app from Google Play and login.

Veracross allows you to view your child’s schedule, attendance, and quarter and semester grades. Families new to Pennington should have received access to the Veracross Parent Portal in May. Medical Records

You may access your child's health records on Magnus Health.

The Pennington School parents association, Parents for Pennington (PfP), welcomes you! All parents are invited to attend the first general meeting of the school year, which will take place during the first week of school. Read more information about PfP.
