Peter Chase

male teacher smiling outsideWhy did you decide to become a teacher?

I started as a business major but was doubling up on German. My senior year, I worked as a German tutor and realized that I really liked helping students. I decided to continue on for an M.A.T. in German.

Who was your mentor growing up?

Virgil Valente was my chemistry and physics teacher in high school. Although I really didn't love the material, I was envious of how much he enjoyed his subjects and how much fun he had working with students. I wondered if I'd ever find a subject that I'd enjoy that much. Then I did: German!

What's your teaching philosophy?

I tell my students every year that I hope they continue on with German in college and use it in some capacity. But ultimately, I hope that I've taught them how to learn. After formal schooling, we eventually become our own teachers. If we want to improve, we have to read about new ideas and rethink how we do things. If we've learned how to learn, we can continue to grow.
