This fall, Pennington School students had the unique opportunity to learn from two talented alumni who returned to campus to share their expertise: Chris DeRose ’03 and Michael Lee Brown ’11.
Michael Lee Brown ’11 is an actor, singer, and songwriter. Brown has kept busy since graduation, first attending Marymount Manhattan College and then starring on Broadway in Dear Evan Hansen. He has made appearances in television series including Prodigal Son and Happyish. He also recently released his solo EP entitled, Way It Used to Be.
Brown hosted a workshop on campus for theatre students this October, sharing acting fundamentals and sage advice for musical audition preparation. A few students even had the opportunity to sing for Brown, who provided on-the-spot expert coaching and feedback.
Chris DeRose ’03 is also in the public eye and has made a name for himself as a dynamic storyteller and Emmy-award-winning reporter. After graduating from McDaniel College, DeRose returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, to work for CBS News at the legendary station KDKA. In October 2023, he won an Emmy Award for breaking news reporting on the east Palestine train derailment, adding to his recognition as a two-time Emmy Award nominee.
DeRose’s visit to campus this fall included insightful discussions with students in both journalism and drama classes. He shared stories about his career in broadcasting, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of news media and the skills required to succeed in the industry.
Our deep gratitude goes to DeRose and Brown, who both left a lasting impression, offering inspiration and insights for students as each continues to chart their own path to individual excellence.
