At Homecoming and Reunion Weekend (October 2023), Bob Pearl ’63 was joined by family, friends, and fellow alumni to officially dedicate the Pearl Family Stadium, including the new Mike Pearl ’61 press box and Bob Pearl ’63 scoreboard. The ribbon-cutting celebration and dedication reception recognized this remarkable Forever Pennington campaign gift from Bob Pearl ’63, which was directed from the estate of his late brother, Mike Pearl ’61. With this generous investment, Bob has created a family legacy as a tribute to his brother’s memory and made a significant impact on The Pennington School.

Directing this transformational gift to Pennington was a way for the Pearl family to contribute to the student experience, athletic programs, family and community gatherings, campus sustainability, and School pride. Bob says, “Mike wanted to make a significant impact on the community and young lives with his estate. I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to honor my brother’s memory than by giving the next generation of students an opportunity to discover their love of the game.” 

During their visit to campus, Bob and his wife Nancy were treated to a tour of the new three-story, state-of-the-art press box from Director of Athletics Jerry Eure ’75 and had a chance to see the new scoreboard and stadium features in action during the Homecoming athletic games.

Taking in the campus vista from the top of the new press box, was a poignant reminder to Bob of the origins of his brother’s success in a profession that he first discovered at The Pennington School. Sixty-five years ago, you could have found Mike peering out from the makeshift window of his small, wooden press box, a place cobbled together next to the Pennington athletic fields, excitedly recording each play and reporting the highlights of every game. This love of the game sparked a five-decade legendary career in sports broadcast production. “This is where everything started for Mike,” Bob says. “He was always out on the field. At some point, he convinced the School to build him his very own press box. This thing was like a little shack on the side of the field, but Mike loved it!”

Mike’s passion for sports broadcasting blossomed into a successful career, a field in which he became one of the most influential producers in sports television. Over the years, he won sixteen Emmy Awards and was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015. He pioneered many of today’s broadcast norms, such as 24-hour coverage and hiring professional athletes to join broadcast teams (giving Charles Barkley his first studio role). He left his mark as a producer for CBS Sports, ABC Sports, ESPN, and Turner Sports. He covered every major event and sport including the MLB, NBA, NFL, World Cup, Super Bowl, Olympics, Triple Crown, US Open, and many more. 

For those who knew him, it was Mike’s fierce loyalty, care for others, and investment in people that define his legacy. Bob says, “After his passing, you wouldn’t believe the number of stories I heard about how Mike went out of his way to take care of people. Yes, he was admired for his successful career, but even more important, he was loved for being an amazing friend to all who knew him.”

Bob also found success after Pennington, following in his father’s footsteps as a business owner and entrepreneur. The work ethic and values from the brothers’ time at the School and from their family shaped their success. The establishment of the Pearl Family Stadium honors Mike Pearl’s memory and is also a nod to the support and connection Bob’s parents and extended family had with the School. Bob and Mike’s cousin, Bill Pearl ’65, is an involved alumnus, and Bob remembers his parents as Pennington champions too. He says, “I think my parents could see how the atmosphere at Pennington made us better students and more mature young men. They knew we each found paths for the future that would have not emerged so clearly otherwise.”
