First Chapel of the Year Connects the Community Beyond the Classroom

Earlier this week, the Upper School gathered for the very first Chapel of the new academic year, with some in the audience experiencing the program for the very first time. The School chaplain, Reverend David Hallgren, took the opportunity to welcome everyone into the space, reminding both returning and new students alike that Chapel is an experience which seeks to nurture each member of the community. “Whether we come from a religious space or not, our time together will be sacred,” said Hallgren.

Pennington’s weekly Chapel program is a long-standing tradition at the School. It provides a dedicated time each week to allow for community sharing and personal reflection. Within the forum, students, faculty, and staff are able to hear from other members of the larger School community and together, they explore various cultures and perspectives through shared stories and experiences.

Several Peer Leaders joined Hallgren on Tuesday morning, sharing some of the things that they enjoy about Chapel: Sofia K. ’26 particularly appreciates the fresh air and change of scenery that the weekly walk over to Chapel affords; Connor T. ’26 likes having a brief break from instruction each week, focusing on community instead of classwork; and Lola N. ’26 values hearing stories and ideas from her classmates.

The importance of being respectful and truly present during Chapel service—whether you are listening from the audience or standing up in front of your peers to share your thoughts—was given particular emphasis. According to Sofia, Chapel gives students “a new perspective and appreciation for what it means to speak up and also for what it means to actively listen.”
