Members from the Class of 2028 Share the Power of Showing Up

When juniors Charlotte K. and James B. took the Chapel podium recently, they spoke from very different places—Charlotte from the grueling routine of competitive swimming and family grief, and James from the daily rhythm of simple acts of kindness. Yet, their reflections converged on a single, vital truth for the Pennington community: showing up for yourself and being there for others is where strength and connection truly begin.

For Charlotte, showing up meant confronting severe athletic burnout after years of early morning practices. Rather than giving up when her motivation faded, she chose the quiet discipline of stepping back onto the pool deck—not expecting quick fixes, but giving herself the chance to heal and grow. Charlotte also recalled the way in which her family came together in solidarity following the passing of her uncle, prompting her observation that, “You don’t have to fix a problem to help a person.”

James echoed that same principle that showing up for others doesn't require grand gestures. Whether holding a door, helping a classmate with homework, or asking a friend how they are really doing, small, intentional moments create a lasting impact, and, according to James, when you are on the receiving end of that support, you naturally feel inspired to extend it to others. “When you’re going through your day today,” he encouraged, “try talking to someone you don’t really know. Who knows? You may end up making a new friend and making a huge impact on their life!”
