On Sunday, February 4, junior Jenny Z. was the featured erhu soloist at a Westminster Conservatory Showcase concert. Similar to a fiddle, an erhu is a Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument known for its versatility. Jenny played an arrangement entitled “Jasmine Flower” under the direction of Dr. Ruth Ochs of Princeton University.
When Dr. Ochs first chose the piece, she began a search to find an accomplished erhu player. Through the good word of Dr. Don Dolan, Jenny was connected with the conductor and ultimately chosen as the featured soloist. Jenny performed the piece with the entire Westminster Community Orchestra in Princeton’s famed Richardson Auditorium.
After demonstrating her proficiency, passion, and professionalism, Jenny has been invited to study orchestral conducting with Dr. Ochs. Additionally, in the coming months, she will have the opportunity to play bass in a student orchestra alongside other Princeton University student musicians.
