Wellness Has a New Fit at Pennington Courtesy of a Brand New Gym

Accompanying the start of a new academic year, Pennington officially announced the completion of the School’s brand new fitness center, a comprehensive project which began last spring.

Chief Financial and Operations Officer Dan Baverstock delivered the announcement Thursday afternoon, just prior to Convocation. “The JINGOLI Gym and Stephen Tan '73 Fitness Center represents a major upgrade for our campus, and it would not have been possible without the dedication of everyone involved,” praised Baverstock. “I want to extend a sincere thank you to every staff member who contributed their time, energy, and patience to bring this project to the finish line. Thanks to the incredible hard work and coordination of so many in our community, the project was finished on time and within budget for the start of the school year.”

Featuring Lifestyle Fitness and Peloton equipment, the space also contains an office which can be used as an additional meeting space on campus for various constituencies. According to Robert E. Martini Associate Head of School Chad Bridges, the opening of this new space, “will allow us to reimagine how other fitness spaces on campus will be used,” including transitioning the downstairs cardio room of Sparks Gym into a space for cheer, dance, and yoga; and the former PSCFit room into a speed and agility room and fencing studio.

While the machines within the reimagined space of the “small gym” are truly state-of-the-art, the facility pays tribute to the School’s past, with murals and images pulled from Pennington’s archives, depicting the original gym—constructed in 1911—and the athletes who trained and played within its walls throughout the years. The end result seamlessly blends the historic character of the small gym with contemporary wellness amenities.

The Stephen Tan ’73 Fitness Center in the JINGOLI Gym will serve the entire campus community: students, faculty, alumni, and staff. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Homecoming Weekend in October, as the School welcomes back the generous donors who helped make this a reality:
