Pennington's Varsity Boys' Tennis team surprised their competition at the Mercer County Tennis Championships, but not themselves as they won a total of eleven singles matches and four doubles matches to amass an impressive 22.5 points and take a third place finish overall.

Pennington had a great day, picking up first place finishes in both second and third singles. Theo Sardain beat West Windsor North’s Dhar Sounak, 6-2, 6-4, at second singles and Ishan Gupta was victorious over West Windsor South’s Kokulnath Ramasamy, 6-2, 6-0, at third singles.

Pennington’s Josh Finkle came in as the number two seed at first singles and played impressive tennis during his three matches leading up to the final. Finkle faced the number one seed, Jonathan Gu from Princeton High, in the championship match and battled hard before falling 6-1, 6-4.

Pennington’s first doubles team of Caleb Li and Dhruv Ramaswamy lost their first match during Monday’s first round, however worked their way into the tournament’s back draw by winning their second match. At finals on Wednesday, Li and Ramaswamy played in the championship match for first doubles in the back draw and lost a close match to Robbinsville.

The Red Hawks' second doubles team of Avery Sichel and Nikolas Chase won their first two matches landing them in the semifinals on Wednesday. Chase and Sichel battled hard against the number one seed, but lost a close match. It was a very good showing for Avery and Nikolas as they came in the number four seed and finished in fourth at second doubles.

In the end, Pennington had taken an impressive 22.5 points, which earned them a third place finish, two singles titles, a finalist at first singles, and a finalist in first doubles in the back draw.

Next up for Pennington is a match at Hun on Friday, April 29 at 3:45 p.m.
